Avemco® Announces Educational Forums for AirVenture
July 23, 2012— Avemco Insurance Company will be presenting three educational forums open to all pilots and aircraft owners during EAA’s AirVenture Oshkosh, July 23-29, 2012. Avemco® president, Jonathan “JJ” Greenway and former president Jim Lauerman will present the sessions.
Presented by JJ Greenway, the first forum, “Cross Country Planning Off the Charts,” will be part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s educational sessions on Monday, July 23 at 4:00pm in the FAA Aviation Safety Center on the EAA grounds.
“Going from A to B is the easy part. Computerized flight planners, pre-loaded GPS routes and electronic approach plates have revolutionized cross country planning. But there’s much more pilots need to know before heading off on a cross-country flight…both for their safety and the comfort of their passengers. There’s more that is vital information about the trip as well as the destination that can’t be found on any aeronautical chart” commented Greenway.
On Wednesday, July 25 at 2:30pm in the EAA Forums Plaza, Greenway will also conduct the forum: “What Kind of Pilot Runs Out of Gas? My Own Story.”
“I thought there were certain things that couldn’t possibly happen to a pilot as careful as I am. But even the best pilots can fall victim to fuel planning mistakes. Fuel mismanagement is one of the leading causes of GA accidents. It almost happened to me after thousands of hours with the airlines and as a CFI. Empty fuel tanks can easily sneak up on you but there are ways to avoid this needless emergency” continued Greenway about his second session.
Jonathan “JJ” Greenway has flown over 14,000 hours since his teens. He was a corporate pilot in the South Pacific before becoming a Captain and Check Airman on the Boeing 767 for American Airlines. Later, he served as Director of Safety for the AOPA Air Safety Institute. An active CFI for over 30 years, JJ still shares his passion for aviation by flying and instructing in his Bellanca Decathlon.
“The Top 10 Aviation Insurance Myths” will be presented on Monday, July 23 in the EAA Forums Plaza by Jim Lauerman. This forum will cover the most pervasive myths that often keep pilots from getting the right coverage for their GA aircraft and flying activities. Lauerman will separate fact from fiction regarding insuring aircraft for the right value, the “hidden treasure” of liability coverage, and the risks of flying non-owned or rented aircraft. This forum will include an inside perspective on accident prevention through information gleaned from analyzing data unique to insurance.
Jim Lauerman began his aviation career in the Navy as an acoustic sensor operator aboard a P-3 Orion. Following the Navy, he earned advanced ratings and operated his own flight school. In 1985, he entered the aviation insurance profession and quickly rose to the executive ranks. With CFII, MEI and ATP certificates and ratings, over 4,000 hours, a career that spans 3 decades, Lauerman possesses a wealth of information on aviation and risk management.
For several years, Avemco has supported pioneering research that has uncovered the need for aviation education based on professional airmanship development in tandem with skills-based pilot training.
